# Designing the Foundation

Every project needs a starting point.

Before manufacturing any of the custom components required for the DIY 5-axis conversion, a reliable reference surface is needed. In this first step, a modular aluminium subplate is designed that will serve as the foundation for the remainder of the project.

The design is intentionally approached as the first iteration rather than a finished solution. As new requirements emerge throughout the series, the foundation will continue to evolve and adapt alongside the project.

## Keypoints

### Why a Dedicated Subplate?

A flat and reliable reference surface is essential for precise machining. The subplate provides a consistent foundation that can be reused throughout the project.

### First Design Iteration

Rather than attempting to solve every future requirement from the beginning, the focus is on creating a practical starting point that can be expanded and refined as the project progresses.

### Future Expansion

Additional features, mounting options, and modifications will be added as new challenges and requirements arise throughout the series.

### Preparing the Model for Manufacturing

With the initial design completed, the model is prepared for CAM programming and machining in the next episode.

### Downloads

The downloadable files represent the final state of the design covered in this video.

They can be used as a reference while following along with the design process, helping to compare sketches, dimensions, features, and design decisions discussed throughout the episode.

For those who prefer to focus on the manufacturing process, the files can also be used directly without recreating the design from scratch. Simply continue with the next step of the series and use the provided model as the starting point.

# Agent Instructions: Querying This Documentation

If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter:

```
GET https://miwicnc.gitbook.io/miwicnc/build-with-me/diy-5-axis-cnc-for-the-snapmaker-artisan/designing-the-foundation.md?ask=<question>
```

The question should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
